Parenting is the most difficult job any of us will ever do in our lives,
and it’s also the one for which we’re least prepared

Teenage mothers are disadvantaged by discrimination and isolation from main-stream schools, as well as the high demands and stresses of early parenthood, and are unlikely to finish their education. The D.A.L.E. Young Mother's Program in Newcastle caters for young mothers, with on site child care,  but many still lack confidence & skills in parenting, and are unable to understand their baby's basic signals and needs. This can create high levels of frustration and stress in both mother and child which in turn impacts negatively on the mother's energy and concentration causing distraction from her studies. Feelings of hopelessness can develop,  leading to giving up on  her education - creating further disadvantage and loss of potential.
Through the Circle of Security - Parenting course, Home-Start will help young mums uncover the hidden but easy to learn signals that their babies and small children are giving about what they need and want, and how to respond appropriately. This results in a more settled baby/child and more time, energy and concentration for studying, greatly improving young mothers' chances of finishing school and gaining employment or successfully entering further study at TAFE or University.
TRIPLE P – POSITIVE PARENTING PROGRAM
Triple P is designed to give parents the skills they need to raise confident, healthy children and teenagers and to build stronger family relationships. Triple P doesn’t tell people how to parent. Instead, it gives parents simple and practical strategies they can adapt to suit their own values, beliefs and needs. The benefits can be dramatic and long-lasting.

Home-Start regularly delivers Triple P - Positive Parenting Programs throughout NSW and Victoria
